International Cheese & Deli - February 1, 2007

Genji Japanese Restaurant - November 15, 2006
57 out of 57 people found this review helpful. Delicious.

Great service, a nicely appointed and very clean little restaurant, and excellent food.

The vegetable tempura alone makes it worth a visit, and the sushi is understandably popular.

I recommend this place.

GING Sing Restaurant - November 10, 2006
4 out of 7 people found this review helpful. Excellent!

A quiet, modern restaurant on the very western end of Chinatown; well worth a visit.

Fresh and flavourful vegetables, spicy sauces, a varied menu, authenticity, good service. And, well-priced to boot.

I recommend this place.

Juliana Apartments - October 8, 2006
4 out of 7 people found this review helpful. These are very nicely laid-out apartments for a high-rise, with good-sized kitchens and massive balconies. The building is generally in good repair.

That said, it does not quite reach the 'luxury' standards it's advertised at, nor the rents it asks.

That it's in a quiet part of downtown is both pro and con; the supermarkets, etc, aren't really in good walking distance. It's a great place for frequent bus riders, though.

I recommend this place.

East Side Mario's - October 8, 2006
2 out of 5 people found this review helpful. Packed, cramped, and dark, at least as this sort of restaurant goes. This means it's more than a bit noisy and disorganised; other locations are better.

The food is reliable -- bland, filling, boring, sometimes tasty. "Italian" it may not be, but it's good for anybody who (somewhat inexplicably) misses the Olive Garden chain.

I do not recommend this place.

Rasputin's - October 8, 2006
1 out of 2 people found this review helpful. Rasputin's has some of the more enjoyable live music in the city for people tired of having their ears blasted and nerves jangled, and it's a nice, funky little spot, but it has some bizarre hours -- very inconvenient for a place sort of off the beaten path.

Call in advance; IF they're open, expect a good time.

I recommend this place.

Mr Mozzarella - October 8, 2006
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. I suspect poor Mr Mozzarella of being underrated; every pie I've had from this small chain has been excellent.

Do try getting nacho chips on your pizza, strange as they may seem.

Service has also been quick and friendly (they were wonderful dealing with a slight error once), and the salads are fresh and tasty and more than just lettuce.

I recommend this place.

Mamma Teresa Ristorante - October 8, 2006
2 out of 7 people found this review helpful. Great for people-watching (even if just via the pictures on the walls), but that might be the only thing remaining 'great.'

Food is reliably good, but rarely much better -- somewhat uninspired Italian. Prices are a bit on the high side for the quality.

Service is great when it shows up. This is not a place for anybody in a hurry.

Still good for a leisurely glass of wine and lunch, though.

I recommend this place.

Sugar Mountain - October 8, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. A dizzying selection of...sugar.

Good variety of candies sold in bulk, from old-fashioned classics to salted liquorices to British imports. They also carry a nice selection of packaged stuff -- again, old-fashioned classics you haven't seen in years, and imports.

Gift items, also; some cards, and an ice cream counter. A good collection of kitsch.

Prices are reasonable for most items, and the service is friendly.

I recommend this place.

Scrim's Florist Ltd. - October 8, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. A nice neighbourhood florist; does a good job with all the usual arrangements.

Also notable for a nice selection of orchids, and flower vases. The large, well-lit shop is great for browsing.

I recommend this place.

Sassy Bead Company - October 8, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. Larger, or at least less cramped, than the Market location -- a definite plus.

A good selection of beads and findings (as well as related accessories); excellent for the casual crafter, less so for those more involved -- this is not the place for bulk purchases. Great for inspiration, though.

I recommend this place.

Rainbow Natural Foods - October 8, 2006
4 out of 4 people found this review helpful. One of Ottawa's larger, if not largest, health food stores...

Excellent selection of all things delicious and disgusting. Good-quality organic produce, nice selection of bath & beauty products, as well as environmentally friendly household accessories.

Friendly service, too.

I recommend this place.

Papery - October 8, 2006
2 out of 4 people found this review helpful. Cute. Perhaps a little too cute at times -- recommended for the cats'n'angels crowd -- but also carries a lot of things less 'cute,' and more 'interesting.' More than just Hallmark...

Cards, stationery, notebooks, other paper ephemera, gifts. Recommended.

I recommend this place.

Ottawa Natural Clinic Pharmacy - October 8, 2006
3 out of 4 people found this review helpful. A dizzying selection of every remedy, treatment, pharmacy what-have-you that's not usually seen at mainstream pharmacies...

Even if you have a bias against homeopathy and herbal what-not, this place is still enjoyable. Friendly, professional service -- recommendations galore, but without pushy salesmanship.

I recommend this place.

Loeb Canada Inc - Ouvert 24 Heures-Rideau Street Market - October 8, 2006
3 out of 3 people found this review helpful. An okay selection, but far from a pleasant place to shop.

Higher-than-normal prices, loud music, short-staffed, scary people hanging out in the parking lot, so-so produce...

The 24-hour concept is great, but it's worth driving to Sobey's for anything more than a few staples. Not recommended.

I do not recommend this place.

LA BAIE-Centre Rideau - October 8, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. The Bay can be rather boring, but that's probably its forté here, attached as it is to a too-trendy mall of chain stores, and bordering on more 'eclectic' Market shopping.

Still a great place for basics; while they don't carry a lot of high-end stuff, they also don't tend to sell junk, and their return policy is excellent.

I recommend this place.

J D Adam Kitchen CO - October 8, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. On the small side, but still carries a good selection of cookware and kitchen what-not.

Has a number of good things not frequently seen elsewhere -- Emile Henry cookware, and aprons, for example -- making it worth a trip.

Big plus: you're left alone to browse; staff is helpful, and the opposite of 'pushy.'

I recommend this place.

Grace Ottawa - October 8, 2006
3 out of 4 people found this review helpful. Packed to the brim with interesting foodstuffs, but recommended only with reservations.

The store itself frequently matches the part of Bank Street that it's on -- run-down and in need of a cleaning.

A bizarre selection worth checking out, though, with everything from wigs to spices...

I recommend this place.

Glebe Pharmasave Apothecary - October 8, 2006
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. One of Ottawa's nicer pharmacies -- on the small side, but well-stocked; carries a large variety of 'natural remedies,' better-quality organic bath products, and other what-not. Well-recommended pharmacy service.

Useful web site (http://www.glebe-apothecary.com/) that's been around for a long time in web years.

I recommend this place.

General Nutrition Centre - October 5, 2006
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. The appeal of this place is lost on me -- it could be a moderately useful vitamin and 'natural remedies' store, but.

There's a large selection of some of the more expensive and absurdly unproven 'remedies' and 'supplements' for all manner of quackery (weight loss! weight gain!), at high prices, with plenty of bizarre claims. Plenty of house brand weirdness.

I do not recommend this place.

Elgin Jewellers Regd - October 5, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. Thoroughly unexciting for jewellery -- this place is more watches and clocks, and watch and clock repair.

Notable: new watch batteries are $10 (tax included), done very quickly -- and pleasantly.

I recommend this place.

Domus Housewares - October 5, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. Loads of nicer kitchen and housewares -- short on bargains, but they carry a lot of nicer items that appeal to chefs and design junkies alike.

Something of an Ottawa institution; still as nice as it was in its previous Dalhousie St incarnation. See also: the top-rated 'Domus Caf'...

I recommend this place.

Devine Fine Jewellery - October 5, 2006
6 out of 6 people found this review helpful. Ted Devine makes some of Ottawa's lovelier jewellery, and has been doing so quite nicely for a number of years. Well recommended for pieces a little out of the ordinary -- this is not your shopping mall "0.0002 ct diamond stud earrings; last week, $999, now, only $99!" banal stuff.
I recommend this place.

Bulldog Pub - October 5, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. A rather frightening place for anybody old enough to be allowed to drink.

Loud, packed, pick-uppy, drunk. No redeeming qualities, save for the obvious appeal to people who like that. It's reminiscent of the latter-day Hull 'strip.'

I do not recommend this place.

Harvey's Restaurant - October 5, 2006
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. Recently, the cleanest and best-run fast food joint in town.

Charmingly good service, sparkling clean restaurant, fresh food cooked just right. If all fast food was like I've had here recently, I wouldn't feel like such a fool eating it here and there.

One question, though: why no milk?

I recommend this place.

Wedge's Plus - October 5, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. I'd recommend this place to a friend, but only a friend; it's a bit humiliating to admit being fond of it.

Superior wedge fries. All around, a Kentucky Fried Chicken that is, I think, a little better than a Kentucky Fried Chicken,

I recommend this place.

Rideau Bakery - October 5, 2006
3 out of 3 people found this review helpful. A reliable and well-liked Ottawa standby; look for its products in many of the better food shops in the city.

Regarded by many, myself included, as a superior producer of hearty adult fare like rye breads. 'Wonder' bread and Rideau rye are barely of the same species; it's serious stuff.

I recommend this place.

Kinki - October 5, 2006
3 out of 3 people found this review helpful. This place does have its fans, but poor and pretentious service -- exceptionally poor (exceptionally frequently poor, according to reviews elsewhere professional ones included) -- and lackluster-to-bad food mean this is more 'image' and 'experience' than a real restaurant.

Genji, on Lisgar Street between Elgin and Metcalfe, would be a better choice for anybody interested in eating while they have dinner.

I do not recommend this place.

Loblaws Supermarkets Limited-Ottawa - October 5, 2006
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. Small -- as supermarkets go in 2006, this is almost a relic of a bygone era -- and not much to look at, but it's apparently well-managed: the produce and deli departments have fresh, good-quality items, and the staff are invariably helpful and friendly.
I recommend this place.

LA Bottega Nicastro Fine Food Shop - October 5, 2006
3 out of 3 people found this review helpful. A real food-lover's delight. (Primarily Italian foods, though I assume all food-lovers are lovers of Italian food.) Perhaps not the cheapest, but not overpriced for what they're offering.

Worth a trip for some deluxe staples -- supermarket olive oil seems lousy after getting hooked on the better offerings.

Bonus tip! If you're single and can't cook, hang out here and hit on their customers.

I recommend this place.

House of Cheese Limited - October 5, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. Rather remarkably for a place in prime tourist real estate, there are some good cheese deals to be had here.

Everything I've picked up here -- and there is a lot to pick -- has been excellent. If you care about your cheese, this is the place.

Also notable for foodies: it is reasonably close to a Vineyard's wine store.

I recommend this place.

Grovy's Roti Hut - October 5, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. The roti -- look for it starting to show up in some local shops -- is excellent. Fillings are fresh and flavourful; the spicing should be just right for just about everybody.

I applaud them for having an unpretentiously cool name, too...

I recommend this place.

Elephant Castle - October 5, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. This used to be a comfy pub; excellent, even, for something attached to a mall. The patio was great for people-watching, service was friendly, and it had the best fried zucchini in the city.

Apparently, people still regularly ask about, but not for, the zucchini -- it's off the menu, which has been updated into a confused chain restaurant's idea of "upscale." It's far from truly horrible, but it leans towards the pretentious and overpriced. It is not nearly tasty enough to rationalise the prices, either.

Service can be pretty good, but is too often non-existent or simply very slow for this to be a reliably pleasant experience.

I do not recommend this place.

Igo Cyber House - October 5, 2006
2 out of 3 people found this review helpful. The computers seem to be fine, and anything open 24/7 has a special place in my heart, but the luxury-free atmosphere is worse than a sixth-rate US college's computer lab, and the 'service' grudging to non-existent.
I do not recommend this place.

Big Daddy's Crab Shack & Oyster Bar - October 5, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. Too loud for my tastes, but I suppose "fun."

Friendly but too often absent service.

Critically: nothing on the menu save seafood. Yes, I _do_ understand that it is a seafood restaurant -- but it's strangely lacking even a token vegetarian offering.

I do not recommend this place.

Musee Canadien Des Civilisations - October 5, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. Slowly recovering from its loss when it stopped being the 'Museum of Man,' and the one in Hull took over that racket.

Of note: this is a stunningly beautiful building.

A few Sunday afternoon hours are not quite enough time -- it is best 'done' in two visits. Exhibits are fantastic for all but the most cynical children, and still of interest to adults. Some are looking a little shop-worn, but the content is still there. It lacks the flashy 'discoverorium!' showboating of some other similar museums, and, here, that's a plus -- quiet contemplation prevails over gaudy eye candy for the ADD-addled.

I recommend this place.

Super Ex - October 5, 2006
2 out of 4 people found this review helpful. The 'Ex' is something of a relic of a bygone age, and a bit of a sad commentary on Ottawa. We're a big city! We're not some hick town with a 'plowing match' -- we have a major fair with real excitement!

We are a hick town, albeit a big one. Ottawa Valley area plowing matches are more fun, and more honest. The bands are never big names, the rides are never big fun, and many of the 'attractions' are rubes-only.

What agricultural fair elements remain tend to get hidden behind the rusty rides and retailing.

Still enough fun for the kids to rate a 2 rather than bottom-of-the-barrel 1, and adults with a keen sense of irony will have some fun, but the rest are better off at the Toronto version of this, or a genuine small-town one.

I do not recommend this place.

Wentworth Plaza Apartments - October 5, 2006
4 out of 4 people found this review helpful. This place always has vacancies, but for good reasons.

The apartments themselves are not horrible to look at -- rooms are reasonably sized, balconies are decent.

The walls are paper-thin; the slightest bump will produce a hole (and a sizable repair bill, though the repairs, when done, are shoddy). Management is unresponsive. Rents are well above current market rate. The exterior of the building is an embarrassment.

The pool, the only selling point beyond the location, is filthy and cold -- much like the saunas. Given that it never seemed to be in use, the filth is something of a mystery...

Also included: poorly constructed storage units in the basement.

I do not recommend this place.

Dow's Lake Towers Apartments - October 5, 2006
5 out of 5 people found this review helpful. To be avoided.

It may be appealingly cheap, but the apartments are no longer as outstandingly cheap as they once were for Ottawa -- and that was the sole draw, with the possible exception of some good neighbours, and a nice view from a number of the units.

The walls are thin, my-neighbour-is-having-sex! thin. A building-wide roach problem is dealt with only very grudgingly and half-heartedly; there will always be a roach problem. 'Management' for any other of the problems likely to be encountered is as good as it is for the bugs.

Kitchens and bathrooms are small but not completely cramped; fixtures are ugly, appliances and fittings are the cheapest possible.

The location, though walking distance to Carleton, doesn't offer a great deal.

I do not recommend this place.
