Brick - September 27, 2006
4 out of 7 people found this review helpful. Don't shop here, they don't do warranties, I had a television and they would not fix it. They told me to talk to Sony. I wanted to return it, and they wouldn't take it back. The whole thing was a disaster. Suffice to say, I will never shop at any Brick location ever again.
I do not recommend this place.

Centre St Laurent - September 26, 2006
1 out of 3 people found this review helpful. There is really nothing in it for a guy other than buy clothing, CD's, and swords/knifes. The only "computer" store in the mall is The Source (RadioShack). It seems to be a very girl focused mall, clothing stores, salons, cafes, shoe stores, jewelry stores..etc...

The food court is really nice, scary nice. Fireplaces, couches, a really relaxed atmosphere. I just wish there was more to do at the St. Laurent mall than clothing shopping.

I recommend this place.

Osgoode Properties Limited - September 26, 2006
5 out of 8 people found this review helpful. I have had only good experiences with this company. I rented from a one bedroom at 1725 Riverside Dr. Great staff, friendly, helpful, genuinely concerned. They were great about fixing any problems, rent was reasonable. Parking was not so great where I was living, but other than that, very happy with them. I'd rent again from Osgoode Properties.
I recommend this place.

Benix & CO - September 26, 2006
3 out of 3 people found this review helpful. Always a sale at Benix & Company, as they try to move pots and pans out of this little billings bridge location. It is crammed to the maximum with stuff, so don't expect to be able to get a stroller or anything in there. You can get some good deals, but really, with a Zellers down the hall, you can usually skip Benix.
I recommend this place.

Baskin-Robbins 31 Ice Cream - September 26, 2006
3 out of 4 people found this review helpful. Good location in respective to where I currently live, this Baskin Robbins is inside a small strip mall. The staff were not especially nice, the prices were not that great. I usually skip this place and go to Dairy Queen or some other ice cream shop.

Athletes World FILA Shop - September 26, 2006
0 out of 0 people found this review helpful. Pretty big location compared to some other ones around the city. Clean, well organized. Sometimes feels like they are over staffed as you see two or three co-workers talking to each other. Decent prices, but not any better than the standard Athletes world, and not better than some other specialty stores in the area. Great service, great location. Prices could be a bit better.
I recommend this place.

A Buck OR Two Store - September 26, 2006
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. Relatively clean and well organized, this dollar store location is operated well. The floors could use a better washing though, but other than that, a reasonable place to get some cheap stuff.
I recommend this place.

A Buck OR Two - September 26, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. A dirty location, very run down. Dollar stores are known for their cheap wares, but this one makes you feel really cheap just by enterting it. It could use a major overhaul, clean up, and organization. I say go somewhere else for your dollar store needs.
I do not recommend this place.

7-Eleven Food Stores - September 26, 2006
0 out of 0 people found this review helpful. One of the better convenience stores in Ottawa, this 7-Eleven location is well lit, and feels much more secure than some of the other locations. It is usually quite clean, and most of their ice drink machines usually work (again unlike many of the other locations).

Good place to get a late night snack.

I recommend this place.

Big Daddy's Crab Shack & Oyster Bar - September 26, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. I am not a big seafood fan, but even I can't say too many negative things about Big Daddy's Crab Shack and Oyster Bar. The food was good, the sizes were great. I could have used better service on my drink refills, but otherwise a relatively good experience.
I recommend this place.

Ada's Diner - September 26, 2006
0 out of 0 people found this review helpful. Simple place, decent menu. Good service usually. It is near enough the main bus terminal that you can walk there to grab a bite to eat, and its cheaper than what you'd get from the restaurant in the bus terminal.
I recommend this place.

Billings Bridge Plaza - September 25, 2006
0 out of 1 people found this review helpful. It used to be a much better mall to go to before they started ripping it apart again, and they removed the bridge. What is Billings Bridge without the bridge up in the foodcourt? The mall is small, and does not have the best stores, but when it is winter, there is nothing better than a real mall. Being able to go from store to store without freezing like the strip malls all over Ottawa, is really nice.

The mall is clean, patrolled by security, and almost constantly under upgrades and changes.

I recommend this place.

Walkley Bowl - September 25, 2006
0 out of 0 people found this review helpful. A reasonable facility, in an odd location. Walkley Bowl is average priced, average service, with a 1970's feel. I wouldn't recommend Walkley Bowl, as almost every other location is a slight bit better atleast in one respect.
I do not recommend this place.

Super Ex - September 25, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. I was hypnotized at the Super Ex a few years ago. It was fun. Otherwise, I have never really had any fun at the Ex. The concerts are sometimes good. The rides are boring. The midway is expensive. Entry to the fair is expensive. I say skip it unless their are some great concerts or events going on.
I recommend this place.

Booster Juice - September 25, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. I used to go here all the time before they changed from just ice to using yogurt. I don't like how they taste now, as much as they did before. Great location, nice and friendly staff. Interesting product. A bit overpriced in my opinion, but healthy and so its to be expected these days.

Don't forget to get your stamps.

I recommend this place.

Hard Rock Cafe - September 25, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. Great, but noisy. I think there are better places in Ottawa to have a conversation, but the food was good, its right downtown in the market, and the staff were really nice. The food is a little pricey for my tastes, but no more than any other decent restaurant in the market. If food, service and location are important, check out the Hard Rock Cafe, but if you want a conversation, go somewhere else.
I recommend this place.

1 for 1 Pizza - September 25, 2006
4 out of 5 people found this review helpful. Nothing amazing, sub-par. $2 frozen pizzas taste about the same as what 1 for 1 gives you. Go anywhere else if you want pizza.

Delivery time was good, under thirty minutes, but other than that...I say stay away. I won't be eating there again.

I do not recommend this place.

Clock Tower Brew Pub - September 22, 2006
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. Eventhough the Ottawa Weblogger Meetup can probably no longer be held there due to its ever growing size, the Clocktower Brewpub was not a bad place. Good location, small patio, nice staff. I think my biggest complaint would be that it is a little too dark.

Reasonable portions, some drinks are too expensive for what they are, but the prices are not that much higher than most other pubs in the area.

I recommend this location, but just barely.

I recommend this place.

Works Gourmet Burger Bistro Inc - September 22, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. Great Burgers, huge infact, and the choices are nearly endless. Not only do you have to pick from a menu of over 100 types of burgers, but then the type of bread, what kind of meat, and what side you want. The choices and combinations seem endless.

The only downside is the price. And a minor note is the squished seating at this Glebe location.

I recommend this place.

Art Beats International - September 22, 2006
0 out of 0 people found this review helpful. A decent little store inside the St. Laurent mall. Some interesting things that look like they came right out of Africa, and some silly looking things that are basically useless. Some nice tribal art and jewelry.

Things seem to be a bit pricey, but I don't really have a comparison. It is fun to look through, but not somewhere I feel I have to go, unlike a few other destinations in the mall.

I recommend this place.

Seller Daniel Dr - September 22, 2006
3 out of 3 people found this review helpful. The best dentistry place in Ottawa. I have never had a bad experience with this dentist office. I highly recommend it to everyone I know. You can watch a movie while they do fillings, they are always great about freezing, making sure to use a freezing gel before actually using the needles to freeze you.

Clean facilities, a calming and very professional environment. Their support staff learn your name basically after one visit. Very positive atmosphere.

I recommend this place.

Norberry Residences - September 22, 2006
5 out of 5 people found this review helpful. Cheap apartments, decent area.

I have lived in one of their buildings for a year now. Having the Riverside Mall, and Mooney's Bay Beach nearby is great. Not on any of the main bus routes, it is still serviced by the 140, which doesn't come as much as you'd want it to.

The west facing apartments are hot, especially 840 Springland Dr, as the wind is blocked by other apartments.

I recommend this place.

Lick's Ice Cream & Burger Shop - September 22, 2006
3 out of 3 people found this review helpful. They make a good burger, but Lick's is a bit more expensive than the 1960's appearance would have you believe. Expect to pay a premium price for a burger, fries and a drink. What do you get for the price? A song, silly atmosphere, and a pretty great burger.

Worth checking out atleast once, but not somewhere you could go often. Good variety on the menu, and a little ice cream area for shakes, sundaes and whatnot. Very kid oriented, but it will never have the success of McD's.

I recommend this place.

Cora's Breakfast & Lunch - September 22, 2006
6 out of 7 people found this review helpful. Going to Cora's is like going to a small diner that reminds me a bit of the truckstop diners, but instead of being a greasy spoon restaurant, you are greeted with generous amounts of fruit.

I have gone a few times to this location, and I really like it. I find it is a bit loud, as the kitchen noise travels through the larger eating area, but otherwise a great place to get some breakfast or lunch. Almost always busy though, so expect a few minutes wait.

Prices are a bit high compared to a restaurant like Denny's, but after eating all the fruit you get with your meal, you don't feel as bad about what you have eaten, like you would at Denny's.

I recommend this place.

Gabriel Pizza & Restaurant - September 22, 2006
1 out of 4 people found this review helpful. Gabriel's Pizza is greasy, but also very filling. It seems like their large is the size of Pizza Pizza's medium, but with how thick the toppings are, including cheese, it is no wonder. The prices are pretty reasonable, and the delivery is pretty fast. If you like greasy pizza, Gabriel's is for you.
I do not recommend this place.

Tim Hortons - September 22, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. A very small Tim Hortons with no drive through. I have not had a good experience at this location. The staff are less than friendly, there is always a long line, and they are always running out of certain items.

Head somewhere else for your double-double fix.

I do not recommend this place.

Oriental Palace - September 22, 2006
2 out of 4 people found this review helpful. This is the Chinese food restaurant I always order from. I have tried around half a dozen other places in Ottawa, but none provide the reasonable prices, and generous portions that Oriental Palace does. The people that answer the phone don't seem to be experts in English though, but otherwise it is all thumbs up from me. Try their Beef and Broccoli, and you won't be sorry.
I recommend this place.

Wal-Mart - September 22, 2006
6 out of 7 people found this review helpful. First off, I have to mention that I don't really like Wal-Mart. Sure it has lower prices, but I don't like that place. The Wal-Mart at South Keys Mall is the worst though. It is dirty, unorganized, and pretty much a disaster.

I would not recommend going to this Wal-Mart go somewhere else for all of your Wal-Mart needs.

I do not recommend this place.

Games Workshop - September 22, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. If you are looking for Citadel Miniatures games, this is the place to look. Its inside the Bayshore Mall, but it is a nice clean store, well lit, with some decent tables to try out the various model based games on. The staff will quickly learn your name, and are very friendly. Many events are held in the store, a very nice community feeling after only a few visits.

The girl that works in retail there, Jo, is great, enthusiastic, and friendly. I highly recommend the Bayshore location.

I recommend this place.

Fresh Fruit Company - September 22, 2006
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. I won my groceries here once, it was only around $15 worth, but still, that really made my day.

The store is nice, clean, and friendly. It makes me think of a small old time grocery store before the big box locations came along. Some great local produce. Lots of vegetables at a really decent price. Worth spending a few bucks in gas to get your fruits and vegetables from here.

I recommend this place.

Feras Barber Shop - September 21, 2006
3 out of 3 people found this review helpful. While not the best barbers in Ottawa, the Feras Barber Shop is simple, average priced, fast service. They always have middle eastern music or television shows on, and its not the cleanest establishment, but the staff are efficient and do a rather good job. I don't recommend getting a shave there though, unless you like to bleed.
I recommend this place.

Denny's Restaurant - September 21, 2006
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. Denny's is Denny's. The restaurant is pretty average in every way. Service is usually average, portions are huge, and prices are reasonable.

I eat here when I am with Sabine and we want to be cheap, as we can share a meal for $15 including drinks and tip.

One of the best things about this Denny's though is it has WiFi, allowing me to do some work on my laptop while waiting for my meal (though the wait for something like pancakes and eggs is not long enough to do much).

I recommend this place.

Dows Lake Pavilion - September 21, 2006
4 out of 4 people found this review helpful. A beautiful location in Ottawa. With boat rentals, shopping nearby, and a restaurant with patio on the pavilion.

The boat rental place was nice, though you have to go on a non-windy day or they won't let you take a canoe, or paddle boat out.

Prices for rentals seem reasonable, but a bit on the high side. The dock is nice to walk on, you get to see some nice boats, people fishing. A great place to relax.

I recommend this place.

Jim Tubman Motors Limited - September 21, 2006
1 out of 2 people found this review helpful. When we were looking for a car, there were very few places on our list, and Ottawa South was the closest to where I live.

There are several car dealerships within a few blocks of each other, but the service at Jim Tubman was the best. After a few minutes of looking through the used cars ourselves, Marty, one of their car sales people, came and helped us out. A few days later we were driving away in our new Chevrolet Cobalt.

Friendly service and support, easy process, and a nice place in a good location. The only negative I can say against them is that they are not willing to really deal on the price much, or at least Marty wasn't willing to.

I recommend this place.

Country Grocer - September 20, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. A small grocery store, with reasonable prices. Not the most expensive place in the area, nor the cheapest. They have a home shopping/delivery service I have not tried, but I have heard great things about it.

The store is rather small, but will have most of what you need to get through the day. The hours that the store is open from are pretty great, as there are rarely times when I pass by that they are closed.

The staff is friendly, most seeming to be students that come and go with a few more seasoned staff that have been their for a long while.

They are the main store/focus in the Riverside Mall, and they are great if you need to walk to pick up groceries.

My major complaints would be that their pastries are not always the freshest, and they have had so many problems with their ice cream freezers, I just refuse to buy ice cream from them anymore. Other than that, a great place to shop.

I recommend this place.

Mooney's Bay Computer Inc. - September 20, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. The store feels a little old and run down. Its displays are ugly, and its prices are too high. Those are the bad things about Mooneys Bay Computer. The good seem to be its service and support, as well as how friendly and informed the staff are.

It does sometimes feel like you are talking to guys from those cheesy Italian Mafia families, but otherwise they really know their stuff.

They are very helpful in talking through computer illiterate people the steps required to fix their computers, and don't lie about things.

Again, their parts, and service are a little more expensive than most people will like, but if you are looking for a local computer store, that will help you get what you actually need and don't want to deal with big box places, this would be one to put on you list, but only if you don't mind spending a few extra dollars for it.

I do not recommend this place.

Mooney's Bay Bistro - September 20, 2006
0 out of 0 people found this review helpful. A local favourite of mine, Mooney's Bay bistro is small, old fashioned, but reasonable in price, good service, and average portions. It has three distinct eating areas. A small patio outside during nicer weather, this can be a treat, but it is surrounded by a parking lot, a brick wall for a grocery store, and the rest of the small Riverside Mall.

Inside there are two areas separated mostly by a brick wall. On the left hand side we have what is basically a small local restaurant, nothing fancy, nothing special. Bright lighting, and a very casual atmosphere. On the right we have a more formal dining area with fancier tables, dimmer lighting, and more of a fancy evening mood. Their are candle centerpieces, which are a nice touch, though they are rarely lit.

Eating in these three areas, you almost feel like you are eating in three different restaurants, as each gives you a different feel. The service outside and in the more formal area seems to be a little worse than the service in the well lit less formal area, as it provides a clear line to the five seat bar, kitchen, and front door area.

If you go into the more formal area or outside, it usually takes a while longer to be noticed, and thus served.

Sometimes you will also find that you can't get any service, as everyone in the area seem to know the staff, and want to talk to them at length. The crowd eating here are mostly older people, but that is most likely due to the senior residence in the area.

The price of the food is reasonable, and the servings are just as large as any other restaurant you go to. The drinks are served in smaller glasses than I would like, but otherwise the food quality is very reasonable.

I think that the Mooney's Bay Bistro is an average restaurant, but it does work hard to appeal to the local group of people, even though there is really no competition within reasonable walking distance.

I recommend this place.
