Poissonnerie Lapointe - November 6, 2006
1 out of 4 people found this review helpful. If you're looking for a fish and seafood store this is THE place to go. Staff is knowledgable and stock is fresh. Your options are open - have it cleaned, filleted or otherwise prepped there or take it home whole. Either way you will not be dissapointed.
I recommend this place.

Barrymores - November 6, 2006
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. This centrally located, happenin' place is one of the best live music venues and dance clubs in this city. Their calendar is worth bookmarking and I hope to see you there.

If you're going I highly recommend dressing warm as they like to have a line up outside to make the placde look cool. Expect to wait even if the place jsut opened or isn't full yet.

Rainbow Bistro - November 5, 2006
1 out of 3 people found this review helpful. There isn't much in the way of food, in fact I'm not even sure if they have muchies. The drinks typical for a bar and don't expect fru fru trendy drinks with cute names. The cover charge is reasonable and the atmosphere is what you'd expect for a blues or jazz bar. Theres, a balcony to better view the stage, a pool table, a barstool seating and a roomy, wooden dancefloor.
If you're looking for Jazz & Blues, then this place is where you want to be!

I recommend this place.

Kettleman's Bagel CO - November 5, 2006
2 out of 3 people found this review helpful. This place is a traditional, family-owned bake shop and bagel bakery, open 24 hours a day. Their bagel's are old Montreal style, meaning that all their bagels are hand-rolled and baked on planks in a wood-burning oven. They have every possible imaginable bagel "accessory" (lox, salmon, cream cheese, etc.) to go along with their fourteen kinds of bagels plus drinks, soups and sandwiches. You can sit down and munch in their cozy eatery or take them home. For those who drive, they have parking, which makes it easy to do a stop in.
I recommend this place.

Sausage Kitchen Inc - November 5, 2006
1 out of 2 people found this review helpful. One of my favorite places in "the market", just the scent of the place is enough to make you drool! Whether you are getting groceries or having a meal from their counter, you can't go wrong. I recomend trying their baccon, which has such an exceptional smokiness to it. Trying their sausage is an absolute MUST, after all they've chosen to name themselves after this item - not to mention the countless awards.
I recommend this place.

Herb & Spice Shop - November 3, 2006
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. The herb & spice section in this store has to be seen to be beleived. If you bring in your own conatiners and take yours to the cash while empty, they'll weigh them and you can fill them there at the store. No muss, no fuss, no transferring when you get home and no wasted containers. Oh, and if you're ever wondering what to do with those pesky plastic bags that you get from other stores. I'm told you're welcome to bring them there and they're reuse them.

NOT the best for produce per say... for that I go to a spot in the byward but this place has become more of a community gatehring place for the like minded. Their bulletin board and staff are a great resource to be utilized for help.

I recommend this place.

Egg Spectation - November 3, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. I agree that this place has very uncomfortable seating. 1/2 awake and hungry, I am not wanting to read and try and figure out the difference between item A and B. The menu that was a bit complicated for me as a morning place. The food was OK but for me a bit on the expensve side. I also found myself late as it took a while to get the bill.
I do not recommend this place.

Boland's - November 3, 2006
0 out of 0 people found this review helpful. This place, attracts a clientele full of zest and flare. Though often a bit on the dark side, is warm and comforting and also friendly and inviting at the same time. The food reflects this. If you are looking for a good place to eat or just drink and enjoy some interesting and varied music Patty's Pub is the place to be. I highly recommend their fish and chips or try a Boxty.

Mexicali Rosa's-Dow's Lake - November 3, 2006
1 out of 3 people found this review helpful. Typical pseudo Mexican / Tex-Mex fare. I agree that the Dow’s Lake location is definitely the nicest of all the locations I have been to. I find the food to be very inconsistent between visits and locations. For the money, the portions are not huge or too huge and sadly the food more often than not is on the disappointing side.

Nachos were underwhelming and you’d likely find a better rendition at any neighbourhood bar. The ones we had were soggy and the toppings sparse. The not so flavourful, bean goo was cold and rice that came with my dish was actually crunchy. The staff, though super friendly were mysteriously no where to be found when yet trying to flag one down to get drink refills or give initial feed back on the food ie. how is dinner / can I get you anything etc.

After my last experience I am not sure I’d go back for a meal but their daiquiris are decent and this location’s patio is nice in the summer.

I do not recommend this place.

So Good Restaurant Inc - November 3, 2006
0 out of 0 people found this review helpful. This place is not exactly undiscovered and I'm not letting you in on my secret discovery place. Its often busy on weekends and IMHO it's worth the wait. Its casual fare, in causal surroundings at decent prices.

I don’t think I’ll ever get through the crazy 300+ item menu and between that and the ‘specials’ that are usually put up on a board I know I’ll never tire of the place due to lack of choice. In fact there are times when too many choices are a bad thing. When I am especially hungry, I do find it hard to choose. Both meat eaters and veggies alike can find a great deal to eat here.

Note: for those whose’ tummies are not so MSG tolerant (as is one of my close buddies) you can ask for it to be left out and you’re usually OK with most dishes but pass on the soup.

I recommend this place.

Nate's - November 3, 2006
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. The service is friendly and warm and the staff seem to have been working there forever and really know their stuff. Don't go there if you want "fine dining" but if a deli sandwich, stacked nice and high, with the typical pickle slice and side of crispy fries is what you’re after, then GO! Its good food with big portions. If you don’t share, you’ll likely end up having some sammitch left over for tomorrow’s lunch. In fact, I highly recommend it. I also suggest poking around store on your way out as you can pick up some yummy things there too.
I recommend this place.

Young Chow Restaurant - November 3, 2006
0 out of 0 people found this review helpful. The atmosphere is a little off-putting and it does look a bit sleepy from the curb but this place cranks out the orders and looks like it has been there a long time. Typical North Americanized oriental style food. Decent take out/delivery and a godsend if you're in the burbs and aren't in the mood to cook but hardly a 'dining experience'.
I recommend this place.

Zak's Diner - November 3, 2006
0 out of 0 people found this review helpful. Zak's Diner, an authentic 50's style diner, conveniently located in the heart of Ottawa's lively ByWard Market. Yes, the theme has been done to death and it’s a bit kitschy but they’ve been around for 20 years so its not corporate, conceived nostalgia. Its vintage and authentic.

If a milkshake is your think I highly recommend trying their ‘Famous Thick Milk Shakes’ that are made with premium ice cream. My personal fave is the Banana/chocolate that’s best shared if you’re going to eat as well but if its just a stop off for the shake guard that thing and keep it to yourself as you’ll find that as soon as you let others ‘try it’ it will disappear fast!

The menu is extensive and typical diner fare and what you’d expect to find. I usually have the Special Club and a milkshake and to be honest it’s a meal for two.

I recommend this place.

Ahora Mexican Cuisine - November 3, 2006
2 out of 3 people found this review helpful. I’m not thrilled with the basement cafeteria-style location that’s sometimes on the noisy side. From time to time I miss the cheep and plentiful street style Mexican food I was able to get stateside and though this in some ways, is no where near that but it is the only thing that even comes close. In some ways its better and in some ways I miss the goo and grease, but I digress.

The food there is fresh and flavourful and a help-yourself salsa bar is a ‘do not miss’. No ingredients were skimped on or overloaded, making for a very satisfying meal. I highly recommend going and experiencing the food.

I just WISH they had some homemade beverages there, like; Agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus Flowers), Horchata, Agua de Tamarindo (Tamarind) or some Café de Olla.

I recommend this place.

Horn Of Africa - November 3, 2006
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. Such a fun food adventure of exotic flavours, with unique combinations of meat, vegetarian, sauce dishes! You eat with your hands and it adds to the experience. Great value for the price. The staff is so eager to please and share the culture and menu experience do not hesitate to ask for help or menu suggestions.

We had a platter with an assortment of items that was superb and I highly suggest getting the combo platters (either meat or veggie) as it introduces you to many dishes and flavours. I also recommend sharing it as the experience is more fun when shared and can help bond you and your companions in this memorable, down home, dining experience.

I recommend this place.

Elgin Street Diner - November 2, 2006
0 out of 0 people found this review helpful. No matter what the hour, the Elgin Street Diner can fulfill your food cravings! Portions are huge the prices are decent and the flavour can’t be beat. Staff are amazing veterans who deal with the late-night crowd rush efficiently and swiftly. During the day they are wonderful about letting you linger over breakfast and are always ready to refill your coffee.

They’ve won all sorts of awards. The burgers are good. The comfort foods on the menu are not only a great touch but all the ones I have tried have *sigh* just put you in a such a warm fuzzy place and are usually less greasy than what you’d encounter at most diners. Many swear by the vegetarian veggie soup but I prefer to chow down on their famous poutine or better still make it a smoked meat poutine. I have veggie friends within a 10 hour or so radius who crave and always stop for their poutine as its made with mushroom based gravy and doesn't give anything up on taste.

It is a causal place I take many out of town visitors. To me it’s a ‘do not miss’ when visiting.

I recommend this place.
