Nates has been a tradition for almost forty years for me. I like to get to Ottawa at least once a year and try to always get to Nates. Great smoked meat and friendly service. Close to the Byward Market, but thankfully not touristy.

The service is friendly and warm and the staff seem to have been working there forever and really know their stuff. Don't go there if you want "fine dining" but if a deli sandwich, stacked nice and high, with the typical pickle slice and side of crispy fries is what you’re after, then GO! Its good food with big portions. If you don’t share, you’ll likely end up having some sammitch left over for tomorrow’s lunch. In fact, I highly recommend it. I also suggest poking around store on your way out as you can pick up some yummy things there too.
